A Public Space Announces a $25,000 Grant from Amazon.com to Fund New
Writing
Brooklyn, New York, June 1, 2011 -- A Public Space is thrilled to
announce a generous grant from Amazon.com to commission, edit and
publish new work. The pieces will be published in the magazine and
featured in a series of live events this fall.
Founded in 2006, A Public Space is an independent non-profit magazine
dedicated to original, culturally relevant fiction, poetry, essays,
and timely translations. From short stories to novellas to fictional
biographies, the magazine's scope is far-reaching and committed to
the essential cause of promoting the importance of imagination in our
lives. The pieces to be commissioned by the Amazon.com grant will
reflect this breadth of vision, and support an exciting range of
literary work.
Amazon.com's grant provides significant funding and will directly
help A Public Space support writers. It will allow A Public Space to
focus on the development of ambitious new work and to raise its
payments for these pieces. In the era of the sound bite and
statistics showing a decline in reading by American adults, we
believe this grant shows vision and a commitment to new literature.
"This grant provides A Public Space with what every literary editor
wants most--the ability to focus our time and attention on our
writers, to invest deeply in their work, without distractions," says
Brigid Hughes, the magazine's founding editor.
Work from A Public Space has been selected for Best American Short
Stories, O. Henry Prize Stories, and Pushcart Prize anthologies; and
A Public Space contributors have been honored with Whiting Writers',
Rona Jaffe, and Lannan Awards, as well as MacArthur Fellowships. Our
editors have participated in ambitious partnerships with The Brooklyn
Academy of Music, The Guggenheim Museum, and the Nippon Foundation,
as we pursue our mission of making literature a matter of public
space.
In addition to A Public Space, Amazon.com has awarded grants to
non-profit author and publisher groups dedicated to fostering the
creation, discussion, and publication of new writing, including the
Council for Literary Magazines & Presses, Milkweed Editions,
Archipelago Books, Richard Hugo House, Poets & Writers, Open Letter,
the Center for the Art of Translation, Ledig House, WriteGirl, The
Loft Literary Center, Seattle Arts and Lectures, The Moth, Best
Translated Book Award, Pen America Center, Copper Canyon Press,
Girls Write Now, and the Association of Writers & Writing Programs.
