Sep 16 Chaos Manor

“See, actually I’m doing a book about this building itself... out the window and within the building, because it’s quite a weird, interesting story.”

—W. Eugene Smith, recorded on his loft tapes, ca. 1960

A theater installation at Invisible Dog, co-conceived by APS contributor Sam Stephenson and theater director Christopher McElroen. Based on Sam Stephenson’s acclaimed book The Jazz Loft Project, CHAOS MANOR uses the building itself as an instrument to play the story of W. Eugene Smith, his jazz loft endeavor, and his particular American moment, by sampling from his 40,000 photographs and 4,500 hours of audio recordings from 821 Sixth Avenue. More information here.
